Zoot lets you quickly collect, review and label information while working directly with the information source, whether it's a Web browser, E-mail client, Word Processor or any other Windows application. You can also enter data directly into a Zoot database. In most cases you will make use of the Zooter, which is the little (z) icon located in the Windows System (Icon) Tray.
The various commands available via the Zooter let you accomplish a good many tasks without switching back and forth between Zoot and the application you're currently working in. The Zooter commands related to getting information into Zoot are discussed below. The commands related to getting information out of Zoot are discussed in the next topic.
Tip: You can access the Zooter menu from any Windows application by clicking on it or by pressing Alt+Z.
Clip Text
To clip information from a Web browser or some other Windows application, first you select the text you wish to clip, then click the Zooter icon and choose ClipTo | <Database> from the pop-up menu (where <Database> is the database in which the new item is to be stored). What happens when you use the ClipTo command depends on the Zooter options you've set. To see the options available, click the Zooter and choose Options from the pop-up menu.
Create a New Item
You can create a new item from scratch while working in any application using the Zooter's New command. Click the Zooter and choose New from the pop-up menu. Zoot will display a menu of databases from which to choose. Select a database and Zoot creates your new item and opens it in a detached Item Editor.
Tip: If you select some text before using the New command, the selected text will be included with your new item.
Quick Clip
When you use the ClipTo command as discussed above, you must always select a target database also. When you use the Quick Clip command, the clipping goes immediately to a preselected database, so the process is a bit quicker. To select your Quick Clip database, click the Zooter and choose Options from the pop-up menu. You also have the option of selecting a folder in which to place your Quick Clips.
Archive Web Page
Choose this command to create an archive of the current web page. The archive will include all components of the web page, including graphics and links. Zoot stores the archive in a .MHT file on your disk drive and links the file to a new Zoot item.
Clipboard Mode
Clipboard Mode is a special mode of operation related to the Quick Clip command discussed above. Click the Zooter and choose Clipboard Mode from the pop-up menu and Zoot places a check mark next to the menu item to indicate that Clipboard Mode has been activated. Now any text you copy to the clipboard will execute the Quick Clip command. Clipboard Mode is provided for those who want to quickly collect text snippets using only the clipboard. Typically this involves pressing Ctrl+A to select text and Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard.
Quick Note
When you use the Quick Note command, Zoot creates a new item in the Quick Notes folder located at the top of the Folder Tree in your database. Quick Note uses the same settings as Quick Clip. To change these settings, click the Zooter and choose Options from the pop-up menu.
