Properties vs. Fields
Top  Previous  Next

Properties are essentially built-in fields that are common to all item types in a Zoot database. The <Subject> and <Date Created> properties are examples of item properties.

The term field refers more generally to all database fields, including the built-in item properties. Zoot makes use of delimited fields, which appear at the top of an item document. Examples of delimited fields are the From:, To: and Date: fields typically found in e-mail messages. Delimited fields can be added to the Item Grid as columns just as item properties can.

Zoot makes use of delimited fields extensively during synchronization with Microsoft Outlook. To see a list of the delimited fields that synchronize with Outlook, click the Smart button and select Field Chooser from the pop-up menu. Click on the drop down list at the top of Field Chooser and select an item type from the list. Field Chooser updates the field list displaying all the available fields for the selected item type.

Note that Field Chooser also includes a User-defined Field selection. This is where you create your own user-defined fields. You can also create fields directly in the Item Grid, simply right-click the Column Headings Bar and choose New Delimited Column from the pop-up menu.
