How to Create a Linked Task Item
Top  Previous  Next

When you create a new item that is linked to an existing item, Zoot creates shortcuts to link the two items. Here we describe how to create a new Task item linked to an existing Contact item. This might be useful if you have a person you need to contact in two weeks and you want to create a reminder in your Tasks database. Since the new Task will be linked to the Contact, it will be easy to pull up the Contact when it's time to make the call.

The following steps let you create a Task item that is linked to a Contact item:

1. Open your Contacts database and locate a Contact item.

2. Click the Link button located just above the Item Editor (right side) and choose Task from the pop-up menu (or press Ctrl+L). Alternatively, you can choose Action | New Linked Task from Zoot's main menu.

3. Zoot creates a new Task item and opens it in a detached Item Editor window, then enters in-place editing mode. Enter a subject for the new linked task. The subject you enter will also be used to name the shortcuts that link the two items, so make sure you enter a subject you'll recognize later.

4. Press the Tab key to move from one column to the next, filling in column fields as you go along. When you're finished, press the Enter key.

Zoot places the input focus in the Item Editor window so that you can start typing in the document area immediately. To view the shortcut linking the Task item to the original Contact item, click the big (Z) button located directly above the Item Editor (left side). Zoot displays a pop-up menu listing all of the shortcuts currently attached to the item.

Notes:

·You can create linked items of any type. Just press Ctrl+L and select a database/item type you desire.

·To link two existing items, click the big (Z) button located just above the Item Editor (left side) and choose New Shortcut from the pop-up menu.
