Create a Linked Item
Top  Previous  Next

Sometimes it is useful to create a new item which is linked to another item or resource. For example, while working with a Contact item you might want to create a new Task item as a reminder to call the contact next week.

When you create a new linked item, the new item and the item you are working with are linked together by shortcuts, that is, each item will have a shortcut pointing to the other item. This makes life easier because when you come across the Task item you can quickly launch the linked Contact item and vice versa. Using this technique over time, the Contact item will accumulate shortcuts which will serve as a log of the activities related to the Contact item.

To create a new linked item, follow these steps:

1. Select the elements you want your new item to be linked to. You may select any of the following:

·One or more folders in the Folder Tree
·One or more items in the Item Grid
·A selection of text in the Item Editor

2. Click the Link button located just above the Item Editor (right side) and choose a database from the pop-up menu.

Zoot creates a new item and opens it in a detached Item Editor window. Zoot suggests a name for the new item and enters in-place editing mode in case you want to change the name. Note that the name you enter will be used to name the shortcuts linking the two items, so choose a name that adequately describes the linked item. Click on the big (Z) button and you'll see that Zoot has created a shortcut to the source you selected in step one. You can test the shortcut by clicking on it.
