Items are individual pieces of information (records) in your database. Items have a wide variety of properties to make it easier to identify and manage them. These item properties are discussed in detail later elsewhere in this help file.
Item Document
Each item has a document associated with it. You can add up to 32k of text to the item document (that's about 5000 words). When you click on an item its document is displayed in the Item Editor window below. To access editor-related commands, right click on the Item Editor and Zoot will display a pop-up menu.
Item Shortcuts
Each item has a collection of shortcuts associated with it. Zoot shortcuts are very similar in function to Windows shortcuts. You use shortcuts to link Zoot databases, folders and items, or to link to a Web page, a Microsoft Outlook item, a Microsoft Word document, or files and folders on your disk drive. To learn more about shortcuts, refer to the section on shortcuts in this help file.
Customized Views
It is often useful to expose a certain subset of item properties when working with the items in a particular folder. For example, you might have a folder in which you store task-related items. When you click on this folder to view its items you'll probably want to see the task-related item properties (<Status>, <Priority>, <Start Date>, <Due Date> etc.).
To view a subset of item properties in the Item Grid, simply add the properties to the Item Grid as columns:
1. Click the Smart button and choose Columns from the pop-up menu.
2. Zoot displays the Columns Dialog. Click the Add button to select the column you wish to add.
Repeat this process for each property you want to view in a column. When you're finished adding properties, close the Columns Dialog and Zoot will update the Item Grid to reflect the changes.
When you change the way items are displayed in the Item Grid you're creating a customized view. Customized views can be shared among folders. To learn more about customized views, refer to the section on views in this help file.
